December instructor update

The cold weather brings the start of Blue Grotto’s busy season. As dive sites shut down up north, more and more instructors bring their students to Blue Grotto. Whether you are a seasonal visitor to the Grotto or teach here year-round, there are several things you should be aware of. This is an excellent time to make sure you are up to speed.

Superhero instructor?

In February, we published an article entitled Become a Superhero Instructor. It covered things every visiting instructor should know. If you’ve not seen it or need to review it, now would be a good time.

Parking problems

Despite our best efforts, we still see students and divers park in a way that blocks access to our cabins, cottages, RV slots and tent camping areas. As an instructor, you are responsible for how your students and customers park. If they cause problems, it will be you who we come looking for.

‘Sorry, but no

Occasionally, instructors ask if they can bring their own compressor or booster pump to the Grotto. Unfortunately, the answer is No. There are two reasons for this.

  • Compressors are noisy. Running one at a crowded dive site does not show a lot of consideration for others.
  • We are painfully aware of several incidents involving compressors and booster pumps that blew up while in use, putting bystanders at risk. Your professional liability insurance doesn’t cover this, nor does it provide us with protection.

You are welcome to bring as many full scuba tanks as you want. But you just can’t fill them here using your own compressor or booster pump.

Streamline the process

If you will be emailing us a copy of your professional liability insurance, be sure to include an updated instructor waiver with it. You can download this from the Instructor page on our website. It’s like our regular dive waiver but has spaces for two dates at the top.

  • The first is today’s date.
  • The second is the date your professional liability insurance expires.

We need both your professional liability insurance with Blue Grotto named as an additional insured and an up-to-date Blue Grotto instructor waiver for you to be able to teach.
